Our world is so rich with art that we take it for granted.

Our world is so rich with art that we take it for granted.

Recently I watched the The Lady a film about Aung San Suu Kyi and her struggles to win democracy for the people of Burma. In the early years, during her first time, under house arrest she sat at the piano and began to play Johann Pachelbel canon in D. One of the guards, alarmed by the sound, exclaims what is going on, “ its music” her husband explains.

No wonder they wouldn't understand music since the military had been in power for 44 years and the military did not allow art. Can you imagine a world without music, paintings, jewelry, fashion, dance, theatre or comedy? Under harsh military rule the Burmese military had one of the worst human rights  records. To live in a culture in which art is not allowed seems unfathomable for most Americans. What would you do if you could not freely express your art? It is important to remind ourselves the struggles others face throughout the world regarding their artistic expression. Never take your art, or the art created by others, for granted.

Alexandra
